FARMINGDALE, NY — The Farmingdale Meat Market is set to celebrate its 75th anniversary on Wednesday. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for noon.

The market was founded by Julius Seelig in 1946 and began as a local butcher shop. The business has been family owned and operated for three generations and is now run by Julius’s son, Kent, and grandson, Lee Seelig.

The popular meat market was lauded for its longevity by Farmingdale Mayor Ralph Ekstrand in a news release.

"It is an incredible milestone for any company to keep their doors open for 75 years," Ekstrand wrote. "...On behalf of the Farmingdale Village Board of Trustees and myself, we are proud of the Seelig family — Congratulations on 75 years and we wish you continued success."

The market is at 210 Main St.

Over the past 75 years, Farmingdale Meat Market has grown from a small retail meat market into Main Street Wholesale Meats: one of the largest, independently owned, federally inspected meat facilities, according to Ekstrand. In recent years, the meat market has also expanded into e-commerce, which has really taken off due to the coronavirus pandemic. Meat has delivered from Farmingdale across the Tri-State area.

"Julius would be proud to know that Farmingdale Meat Market is still thriving and has since expanded into wholesale (for 30+ years now) with Main Street Wholesale Meats," Ekstrand said.

The retail store carries beef, pork, veal, lamb, poultry, provisions, groceries and more. Farmingdale Meat Market also has its own website.

The market has its own proprietary blend of ground beef called the 1946 Blend, which honors the year the market was founded by Julius, said Lee Seelig.

"We are really thankful for the support of the Farmingdale community and greater Long Island community and that's why we are doing several 'giving back to our customers' initiatives to celebrate our 75th anniversary," Lee said.

The market is in the midst of giving away $75 gift cards daily for 75 days straight to a random customer who enters the store.

"People are loving getting a gift card for no reason other than being lucky," Lee said. "We've even had a few people burst into tears of joy upon winning the gift card. After the gift card giveaway is over, we will announce more 75th Anniversary inspired promotions."

Ekstrand also noted the warmer weather in his release. More people are getting vaccinated, while a lower amount of COVID-19 cases are being reported across Long Island, the mayor said.

"We are moving in the right direction," Ekstrand said. "Good news — as New York State guidelines continue to evolve, it is so nice to see more activity throughout the Village. However, please continue to practice social distancing, wear face coverings, wash your hands often, and consider getting vaccinated (if not already vaccinated)."
