Flag Football Celebrates its Super Sunday

Farmingdale league celebrates its 10th season; honors three special guests.

Farmingdale’s PAL Flag Football League celebrated its 10th Anniversary recently with its annual Super Bowl festivities at Woodward Parkway Field and Allen Park.

More than 1,000 boys and girls capped another successful season with the older divisions competing for Super Bowl bragging rights and the younger players getting another week of fun.

This year the community honored three men who spent the last decade building the league into one of the biggest and best in the Northeast. The youth of Farmingdale will forever be indebted to Denis Donovan and Ray Webb who founded the league and to George Mauro who made it possible for the league to grow.

Special thanks to Farmingdale High School’s wrestling team who helped with the food Sunday and to the dozens of directors and coaches who volunteer countless hours each week, year after year.

Here are some of the highlights from the last week of play.

The Redskins ended the season vs.the 49er's. Brendan Gigante scored a touchdown on a long catch and run play. Outstanding passes from Tommy DeRespino (T-Mac) and Chris Bergensen helped to keep the Redskins in the game. Bryan Birkl, James Hammelman and Peter Fernandez all ran the ball well. Patrick Murphy and Christian Mall came up big on defense by knocking down passes and pulling multiple flags.
