Joseph V. Belisi, Vietnam War Vet From Farmingdale, Dead At 73

FARMINGDALE, NY — Joseph Vincent Belisi, a "Daler Hero" from Farmingdale, died on June 16 at the age of 73 due to Parkinson’s Disease, according to the Village of Farmingdale.

Belisi is a two-time Purple Heart recipient from the Vietnam War, retired Nassau County police sergeant, former Superior Officers Association vice president, and Nassau County Legislator for the 14th District.

Friends and colleagues paid their respects at the Arthur F. White Funeral Home, and St. Kilian RC
Church, followed by a private service at Calverton National Cemetery.

"Legislator Belisi was a great friend to the Village of Farmingdale and The Board of Trustees and I took great pride in declaring December 2nd, 2013 as 'JOE BELISI DAY!,'" Farmingdale Village Mayor Ralph Ekstrand said in a news release. "This award was a celebration and tribute to Joe’s untiring efforts and the many contributions to the Village of Farmingdale."

Joe was very involved in the local community as a member of the Sons of Italy in America, the Knights of Pythias, and he served on the executive board of the Italian Americans in Government Service. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, as well as a little league coach.

"It takes a special person to dedicate a lifetime of service to others," Ekstrand said. "Joe did just that and it is very rare that you come across a person of character like him. I wish he could’ve been with us for a much longer time. We will all miss his honesty, counsel and courage. Joe dedicated his life to his country, his family and to his community. The Village took great pride in recognizing
and honoring this very special man. On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Village of
Farmingdale, I extend our deepest condolences to the Belisi family."
