New Contaminated Soil Found In Bethpage Field: Report

BETHPAGE, NY — Additional areas of contaminated soil due to past Northrop Grumman operations were found under the ground near the site of a former ball field in Bethpage in Bethpage Community Park, Newsday reported.

Tests in May revealed the soil contains trichloroethylene, or TCE, Newsday reported.

TCE is a "colorless, volatile liquid" which is used as a solvent to remove grease from metal parts or a chemical used to make other chemicals, according to the CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry. TCE exposure can come from air, water, food, or soil, or direct skin contact. Relatively short-term exposure to TCE can lead to harmful effects on the nervous system, liver, respiratory system, kidneys, blood, immune system, heart, and body weight, while the CDC said there's strong evidence that long-term exposure can cause kidney cancer in people.
