History of the North Shore Symphony Orchestra, provided by Friends of NSSO:

“The North Shore Symphony Orchestra is currently celebrating its 55th Anniversary Season. Founded in 1961, by Dr. Charles Gouse, the North Shore Symphony Orchestra has provided a way for hundreds of individuals from all professions and ages to share their enthusiasm for orchestral music. In 1990 Susan Deaver was appointed as Music Director and Conductor and re-established NSSO as one of Long Island’s finest community orchestras. Many members of the orchestra attended the country’s leading conservatories including Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. The North Shore Symphony Orchestra, which is the orchestra-in-residence at Plainview Old Bethpage JFK High School, presents a series of four concerts each year, which includes performances of standard orchestral repertoire as well as newly commissioned contemporary pieces. Featured soloists have included promising young Long Island musicians, members of the New York Philharmonic and professional young musicians.

In 1993 the North Shore Symphony Orchestra established a Young Artist Award to recognize outstanding high school musicians, a competition which is now held every two years. In the fall of 2008 NSSO’s Artist-in-Residence program was established by Maestra Deaver to bring top caliber professional musicians to serve as concertmaster and mentor to the orchestra in both rehearsals and concerts. This program broadens the orchestra’s creative and musical experience and provides an additional opportunity for NSSO to provide educational outreach within the school districts of its Long Island community.

The North Shore Symphony Orchestra was in residency at North Shore High School in Glen Head for almost 25 years as part of the Community Education Program before relocating to Plainview Old Bethpage JFK High School in the fall of 2004. Recent NSSO performances have included concerts at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, North Shore High School with the North Shore Community Chorus, and at the Morgan Park Summer Music and Arts Festival.”
