Obituary: J​ohn F. Leary Jr., of Farmingdale, Dies at 89

The longtime local resident passed away last Tuesday.

John F. Leary Jr., of Farmingdale, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 17. He was 89.

He was born in Brooklyn to his late parents John and Alice (Cullen) Leary.

He attended Queen of All Saints and Saint John’s Prep Schools. He was a Navy veteran of WWII.

John and wife Marion Bartley married in May 1949 at Our Lady of Angels R.C. Church, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

He was former President of the United Weighers & Sugar Samplers Union – Local 3. As a union organizer he visited ports up and down the east coast; he negotiated contracts for the workingman for more than 30 years.

In addition, he served in ministry of Church as an altar boy in his youth from age 8 thru 17; and then an usher at Saint Kilian R.C. Church, Farmingdale, for nearly 60 years.

John played basketball in his youth, but golf was his game as an adult. He often played the Green and Black courses at Bethpage State Park. He was a loyal NY Rangers and NY Giants fan.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in life by his wife, all his siblings and in-laws: Marion (wife of Howard Hall), Alice (wife of Arthur Ferguson) and Joseph (husband of Barbara Quinlan). John was also predeceased by his sister-in-law Noreen (husband Floyd Smith) and brother-in-law William Bartley (wife Joan Bass, living) as well as by nephews Kevin and John Michael, nieces Susan, Jana and Debbie.

He is survived by his daughter Marion Grace and son-in-law of John (Jack) Dreyfus by 11 nieces and nephews: Hank, Howard, Jeff, Brian, Stephen, Brian, Maureen, Patrick, Michael and Carol Lynn.

In addition, he is survived by over 31 grand nieces and nephews.
