Long Island Weather: Snow Total Estimates Rise

BREAKING: Winter weather advisories have been expanded. The evening commute will be a mess. See the latest forecast.

If you can sneak out of work early Monday, you are going to want to do so. The evening commute promises to be brutal.

The National Weather Service has increased snow totals estimates for Long Island. Winter weather advisories are now in effect in Nassau County. A winter weather advisory will also into effect for western Suffolk County at 4 p.m.

A total of 3-5 inches of snow is likely in northern Nassau County and 2-4 inches is expected in southern Nassau and western Suffolk County. The East End is still likely to be spared the brunt of the storm with an inch or less of snow in the forecast.

"Plan on slippery road conditions," the weather service says. "The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commute."

Rain is likely to mix with snow through the Monday evening commute before turning to all snow Monday night. Winds will gust up to 35 mph.

The snow should end around daybreak Tuesday and then dry conditions are expected the rest of the week.

The full forecast:

Monday afternoon- A 30 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a steady temperature around 38. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. Breezy, with a north wind 21 to 23 mph.

Monday night: Rain before 8pm, then rain and snow between 8pm and 11pm, then snow after 11pm. Low around 29. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Windy, with a north wind 21 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Tuesday- Snow likely, mainly before 8am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 40. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. Northwest wind 15 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 31. West wind 8 to 13 mph.

Wednesday- Partly sunny, with a high near 43. West wind 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33.
