Thousands Lose Power As Thunderstorms Batter Long Island

A wind gust of 68 mph was recorded on the island this evening.

It certainly could have been much, much worse. Thousands of Long Islanders lost power Tuesday evening as a powerful line of thunderstorms swept across the region, but there were no reports of injuries or serious property damage.

That was not the case elsewhere. An 11-year-old girl died after a tree fell onto a car in the Hudson Valley during a storm. Tornadoes touched down in the Hudson Valley and in Connecticut.

Here on the island, as of 8:49 p.m., PSEG Long Island says 2,715 of its customers are without power. That figure has been dropping as the night has progressed. See the outage map here.
