Torrential Rain Possible As Storm Moves Across Long Island

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather warning as the storm move din Tuesday afternoon. Flooding is also possible.

The National Weather Service is warning Long Islanders that the storms currently overhead could be dangerous at times.

The thunderstorms, which are predicted to last through the afternoon and into the evening, could have "strong to damaging winds" and "torrential downpours," the NWS said.

In addition to the wind and rain, there may also be flooding on streets and in small streams from the runoff from the rain. Specifically, the NWS said the flooding would likely affect Islip, Brentwood, Levittown, Freeport, Valley Stream, Commack, Long Beach, Huntington Station, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Glen Cove, Plainview, Garden City, Massapequa and Hauppauge.

Here's the forecast for the rest of the week:

  • This Afternoon: Showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. High near 83. South wind 10 to 13 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms before 2am, then a slight chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Low around 67. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 87. North wind 7 to 10 mph.
  • Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 66. North wind 6 to 9 mph.
  • Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 82. North wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon.
  • Thursday Night: Clear, with a low around 67.
  • Friday: Sunny, with a high near 83.
  • Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 69.
