FIRE ISLAND, NY – A dead great white shark was found washed ashore on Fire Island beach Sunday morning.

Chris Verga, of Bay Shore, says he found the shark between Kismet and Saltaire. The appropriate authorities have been notified.

In 2016, great white shark researchers discovered the first North Atlantic nursery in the waters off Montauk.

Long Island is a good area for shark breeding because geographically it extends out into the Atlantic and the Gulf Stream from the South and leads to a very fertile area, rich with nutrients, according to Joe Yaiullo, curator and co-founder of the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center. Runoff is a fertilizer, promoting growth of algae, which small shrimp eat, and so on, up the food chain.

"It's rich water that supports the whole diversity of life," Yaiullo said in 2016.
