Saltaire Home 'Significantly Damaged' In Blaze: Fire Department

Roughly 90 firefighters and EMTs from seven departments responded to the Friday morning blaze.

SALTAIRE, NY —A fire ripped through a building in Saltaire on Fire Island on Friday morning. Video from Suffolk NY Scanner posted on Twitter shows the structure completely engulfed with heavy smoke billowing from it.

The fire broke out at a home on Inlet Walk in around 7:15 a.m., said Jarrod Bernstein, an assistant chief with the Saltaire Volunteer Fire Company. The house sustained "significant damage" before the flames were under control around 9:20 a.m., Bernstein said.

No one was home at the time the fire started. Roughly 90 firefighters and EMTs from seven departments both on Fire Island and the mainland responded.

Arson Section detectives are investigating the cause of the fire.

Firefighters from Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Kismet, Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, Point of Woods, West Islip and Bay Shore responded to the scene, according to Suffolk police.
