Atlantic Beach Latest to Ban Bamboo

The Village of Atlantic Beach recently became the latest municipality to ban the growing of bamboo on its properties.

“Bamboo is like a science fiction movie plot, where you’re eaten up by a plant that invades everything,” Mayor Stephen Mahler told Patch. “That’s why communities are voting to outlaw bamboo. It’s hard to stop and destructive.”

The planting, growing or maintaining of bamboo plants is also illegal in the Town of Hempstead. Town residents had shown evidence of damaged tree roots, pipes, sidewalks and even foundations as a result of out-of-control bamboo growth.
