Here are the top stories today in Five Towns:
- A number of Nassau County beaches have advisories against bathing after yesterday's rainfall. The advisory lifts Sunday morning, unless continued elevated bacteria is found. Hewlett Point Beach in East Rockaway and Island Park Beach in Island Park are among the affected beaches. (Newsday)
- Olivia Ramseur profiles a musician who graduated from Hewlett High in 2017. Michael Shapira is now a student at the Manhattan School of Music and has released a new song and video, a cover of the song “I Believe in You." Shapira plays drums and sings. (LI Herald)
- Jerry Barmash looks at how Nassau County fared during Elsa. As of noon Friday there were only 6,000 power outages reported and flooding on 17 county roads. The effects were less than many feared. (Patch)
- Olivia Ramseur also looks at Hewlett Harbor native Emily Austin who worked as a backstage correspondent for the Battle of the Platforms event in June where online celebrities competed in boxing. Austin is an influencer and model trying to break into sports journalism. (LI Herald)
- An Inwood man was arrested in a drug sting by the Queens DA in Far Rockaway. Dewayna Edwards, 45, of Inwood, faces a 70-count indictment for conspiracy in the second and fourth degree, criminal sale of a controlled substance in the first and third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first degree, and criminally using drug paraphernalia in the second degree.
