Long Island Weather Forecast: Up To A Foot Of Snow Possible

The second nor'easter of the young month will strike Wednesday and could dump up to a foot of snow on parts of Long Island.

By Wednesday morning's commute, snow will be falling across much of the Tri-State as the low pressure continues its approach. By Wednesday afternoon and early evening, the snow may come down moderate to heavy at times. Snow rates of 1-2 inches per hour are possible, mainly for areas north and west of NYC, where the heaviest of the snow will fall.
Nassau County and northwestern Suffolk County will be under a winter storm warning from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 4 a.m. Thursday. The rest of the island will be under a winter storm watch.

Snowfall total estimates vary greatly across the island and the NWS cautions that the storm track remains uncertain, but Northern Nassau is currently expected to see up to a foot of snow while just 2-3 inches is likely to fall in Montauk (see the snow total map below).

And don't look now, but AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski says: "Mother Nature may have one more potent, coastal storm for the Northeast into the middle of the month before the pattern shifts somewhat. After the storm this Wednesday and Thursday, a new storm may gather intensity along the Atlantic coast from Sunday, March 11, to Monday, March 12."


The full forecast:
Tuesday- Sunny, with a high near 42. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon.
Tuesday Night- Snow likely, mainly after 4am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 32. East wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
Wednesday- Snow. High near 36. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. Breezy, with an east wind 13 to 18 mph increasing to 19 to 24 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
Wednesday Night- Snow, mainly before 1am. Low around 33. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Breezy, with a northwest wind 16 to 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
Thursday- Partly sunny, with a high near 42. West wind 11 to 14 mph.
Thursday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30.
Friday- Partly sunny, with a high near 42.
