Hewlett's First Ever Chanukah Gelt Drop!

Local Supporter with bucket truck company to Drop Chocolate Chanukah Coins

On Sunday, December 22, at 6:00 PM, Chabad of Hewlett will be hosting a community- wide Menorah Lighting at Veteran's Memorial Triangle at the corner of Broadway & W. Broadway in collaboration with David Friedman and the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association, in celebration of the holiday of Chanukah. The Menorah Lighting will feature Hewlett's first ever Chanukah Gelt Drop. The rental "Cherry picker" truck of Al-lectric of Freeport, NY will be extending it's stand and showering the ground with chocolate gelt (coins) for all participants.

This activity brings the ancient custom of giving children gelt, or money, on Chanukah to a whole new level. The custom of giving gelt was designed to offer children positive reinforcement for exemplary behavior, particularly as a reward for diligence in their studies, and acts of charity. In addition, the custom of distributing gelt enhances the children's happiness and festive spirit.

At the Gelt Drop, not only will there be gelt, but it will be raining down with much drama and fanfare. Chabad of the Hewlett is known for its innovative approach to Jewish education and the Gelt Drop will not disappoint.

"We wanted make something exciting for the children. They will receive their "traditional" chanukah gelt in an entirely different way! We will be very excited to see the children's response! We are hoping this make the holiday come alive, and help children feel more connected to their Judaism." Rivkie Tenenboim, co-director of Chabad of Hewlett commented.

Participants will also enjoy festive holiday music, fresh sufganiyot (traditional jelly doughnuts), as well as other traditional chanukah food and hot apple cider.

The celebration will conclude with a Giant Menorah lighting, facing the triangle, so all passers-by can view and be a part of the festivities.

"Chanukah is a time that unites us all, as we are remembering the miracles and remembering our heritage" said Rabbi Nochem Tenenboim, director of Chabad of Hewlett. "The light of Chanukah represents the light within us, and the desire to share a light with another and make this world a better place, with good deeds and kind acts."

Chabad of Hewlett will also be hosting a Chanukah on Ice Event on December 26 6-8pm at Grant Park Ice Skating Rink.
