Hewlett-Woodmere School District has made two new major hires. Grant Park in Hewlett is undergoing some major renovations, and the rainy week is leading to some nearby beach closures.

1. Keldy Ortiz tells the story of an Inwood war hero. Pfc. Thomas F. Minogue died in 1967 at age 20 while shielding his wounded commander from enemy fire in Vietnam. The Armed Forces Reserve Center in Farmingdale will be renamed in his honor. A character based on Minogue will be in a new movie, "The Greatest Beer Run Ever," based in Vietnam. (Newsday)
2. Matthew Ferremi has the story on the appointment of new interim deputy superintendent John Hogan by the Hewlett-Woodmere School District. Geraldine Johnson De Carlo has been appointed to interim principal for Hewlett High School. (LI Herald)

3. The Long Island Press explains why Valley Stream native Naomi Osaka quit the French Open. The tennis player, ranked second in the world, was fined for skipping a news conference she was contracted to do. Osaka maintains it was due to mental health concerns. (Long Island Press)
4. Joan Gralla advises readers to check if all the recent rain has created a swimming advisory at your local beach. Hewlett Point Beach in East Rockaway was closed due to elevated bacteria levels on Saturday. The advisory has since been lifted but with more rain coming, you can call 516-227-9700 to check each day if your beach is under an advisory. (Newsday)
