Lawrence is Planting the Seeds for a Greener Future
Young Students in Lawrence Celebrate Earth Week by Giving Love to the Planet
Lawrence, N.Y. — The Lawrence Union Free School District celebrated Earth Day with multiple hands-on educational activities at various grade levels. The Lawrence Early Childhood Center and Lawrence Elementary School participated in planting projects to show their appreciation for our earth.
Pre-k and kindergarten students planted pansies, donated by Assemblywoman Melissa Miller, outside of the Lawrence Early Childhood Center. Each student received two flowers of their own to plant. The early childhood students also learned about the environment, nature, and ways to preserve the planet.
Lawrence Elementary School students took a special trip to Rock Hall Museum to celebrate Earth Day. Science classes planted flowers on the museum property and visited alpacas while other students discussed the importance of taking care of the planet. Rock Hall is a historic home located in Lawrence. It was built about 1767 and stands on a majestic, park-like setting overlooking Jamaica Bay.

Elementary students also celebrated Earth Day from the classroom. Mrs. Mena's bilingual 6th grade class researched endangered animals and Mrs. Hurwitz's class created an Earth Day poster after studying the history of Earth Day.
The Lawrence Union Free School District believes it is crucial to teach students how to care for the earth and help young students understand how to respect and care for animal and plant life, natural resources and their habitats.
