Lawrence Students Aim to Read One Million Minutes
Lawrence Elementary School Participates in One Million Minute Reading Challenge
Lawrence, N.Y. — Students at Lawrence Elementary School in the Lawrence Union Free School District are participating in the “One Million Minute Reading Challenge”. The goal of the challenge is to have each student read 200 minutes a week for the remainder of the school year. If the students each complete their 200 minutes of reading weekly, the entire school will reach their goal of one million minutes!
Each day during the first week of the challenge, Principal Rina Beach and Assistant Principal Jacqueline Beckmann dressed up as different book characters to get the students excited about reading. To motivate the students even further, Ms. Beckmann has promised students that if the school's goal is reached, she will dye her hair pink for the students.
This challenge comes at a convenient time as the The Book Fairies, a not-for-profit organization that collects reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York, has recently generously donated books for students at Lawrence Elementary School to take home and keep which they can then use to accumulate minutes towards the challenge.
