Man Broke Into Nassau House, Attacked Homeowner: Police

Police say the man was caught rummaging through the homeowner's things when he shoved her and fled.

VALLEY STREAM, NY — A Manhattan man was arrested early Tuesday after police say he broke into a home in Valley Stream and attacked the homeowner when confronted.

According to police, a 76-year-old woman woke up around 2 a.m. on Tuesday and noticed a light in a different room of her house. She got up to investigate, and found a man with a flashlight rummaging through her belongings.

Police say the woman confronted the man, and the man shoved her and fled. The shove caused the woman pain in her neck, back and hip. Police say the man fled with her keys and cell phone.

The woman called police, and officers located the man in the back yard of a home on Newburg Avenue in North Woodmere, police say. He was identified as Travis McCoy, 27, of Manhattan. He was arrested without incident.

Police say their investigation found that McCoy had also broken into three cars that night, and had trespassed at a home in Valley Stream.

McCoy is charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, fourth-degree grand larceny, possession of burglary tools, two counts of criminal possession of stolen property, two counts of petty larceny and trespassing. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
