1. Mike Smollins has the update on the proposal to create a new local water authority: the State Assembly and Senate passed a bill to replace New York American Water with South Nassau Water Authority and a North Shore Water Authority. The change would affect residents in the Towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay. (LI Herald)

Jay Mathews writes a column in the Washington Post looking at education writer Karin Chenoweth's book Districts That Succeed: Breaking the Correlation Between Race, Poverty, and Achievementthat explores six case studies from around the country. Valley Stream 30 is one, where African American students performed 1.2 grade levels above the national average in 2016. (Washington Post)

3. Tory N. Parrish has the details on a new Amazon Fresh location that may go into a former Waldbaum's in Oceanside at 3620 Long Beach Road. There are 14 other Amazon Fresh sites on Long Island. (Newsday)

4. Jerry Barmash reports on a man killed by gunfire in Elmont Sunday. The man was 49 years old and found on Carnegie Avenue. (Patch)

5. Tory N. Parrish also has the scoop on a Manhattan-based discount retail chain coming to Long Island. Shoppers World will open its first LI store at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream. (Newsday)

  • The U-15 Lynbrook/East Rockaway Panthers girls soccer team won the Hershey Memorial Day Challenge in Pennsylvania. The tournament had 40 teams competing from Virginia, Maryland and Western New York. (LI Herald)
  • Local splash parks are open: Bay Park, 1st Avenue, East Rockaway is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Memorial Day to Labor Day. Grant Park, Broadway and Sheridan Avenue, Hewlett, is open 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day. $10 to park weekends and holidays without a leisure pass. North Woodmere Park, 750 Hungry Harbor Road, North Woodmere, is open June 28-Labor Day. Resident and non-residents pay a fee. (Newsday)
  • A free virtual summer robotics coding class is open to all incoming seventh to tenth grades in Hewlett-Woodmere. It starts June 28. (Facebook)
