Strong Thunderstorms Approaching Nassau County

The National Weather Service has issued the following special weather statement:

..AN AREA OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL AFFECT HUDSON...UNION... SOUTHERN ESSEX...QUEENS...RICHMOND...BRONX...KINGS...NEW YORK (MANHATTAN) AND WESTERN NASSAU COUNTIES...

At 847 PM EDT, strong thunderstorms were clustered over Edison, or near Perth Amboy, moving east at 40 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph are possible with these storms.

Locations impacted include...
Newark, Jersey City, Jamaica, Elizabeth, Flatbush, Flushing, Bayonne, Mott Haven, Hoboken, Plainfield, East Tremont, Linden, Valley Stream, Long Beach and Orange.

Heavy rainfall is also occurring with these storms, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
