Daiso Japan Opens Shop In Flushing, Queens

The popular Japanese dollar store is known for its "kawaii", or cute, designs. The Queens location is Daiso's first store on the East Coast.

FLUSHING, QUEENS — Popular Japanese dollar store Daiso opened its first East Coast location Friday in Flushing, Queens.

Daiso is known for its cute, "kawaii" items like stationary and keychains, as well as bento boxes and other household goods, at costs from $1.99 to $8. The chain has several thousands locations throughout Asia and U.S. locations in California, Texas and Washington.

The 4,109-square-foot shop, located in The Shops at Skyview Center, celebrates its grand opening Friday and Saturday with goodie bags and raffles. Customers lined up starting at 7 a.m. Friday, and extra mall security was called to manage the line, a Daiso spokesperson said. A Japanese Taiko drum performance greeted the first customers.

Customers Friday and Saturday will be eligible to enter a raffle for an undisclosed prize by asking for a ticket by the store's entrance. Daiso will offer samples from snack and drink vendors and balloons for children. The first 100 customers Saturday will receive a goodie bag.

"Daiso has captured the imagination of shoppers around the globe with its product mix and unique philosophy," Yoshi Murata, Daiso's U.S. senior vice president, said in a statement. "We are confident that New York residents will be delighted by the Daiso shopping experience that is beloved by many."

Daiso Flushing is located in The Shops at Skyview Center at 40-24 College Point Blvd.
