FLUSHING, QUEENS — It's opening day for New York Mets fans. The team kicks off its season with a home opener Thursday afternoon against the Washington Nationals.

Mets fans are showing off their support for the baseball team, which is riding a hot streak into Flushing's Citi Field after winning five of their last six games. Noah "Thor" Syndergaard faces off against the Nationals' own ace pitching ace Stephen Strasburg.

Local officials could start their own baseball team, given how many made it to Flushing for the game. The Citi Field crowd included State Senators Mike Gianaris, James Skoufis, Jamaal T. Bailey and Jessica Ramos; State Assembly Members Marcos Crespo, Ari Espinal, Carmen De La Rosa and Ron Kim; City Councilman Fancisco Moya and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.
