NYPD Adds New Class Of Canine Crime-Fighters To Transit Bureau
The New York Police Department added sixteen dogged detectives to the force this week.

COLLEGE POINT, QUEENS — The NYPD has added sixteen dogged detectives to the force.
Tuesday was graduation day for a new cohort of canine crime-fighters at the NYPD Academy in College Point, where each dog was each named after police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
They'll sniff out crime on the subway, buses and ferries as members of the police department's Transit Bureau Canine Unit, according to NY1.

"The remarkable, new NYPD Transit K9s and their police officer partners have been highly trained to keep the city's millions of daily straphangers safe," NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said in a statement on Twitter.
The newest four-legged cops include Canine Gunny, named after FDNY Firefighter Matthew Garvey, who died responding to the Sept. 11 terror attacks, and Canine Brophy, named after NYPD Officer Thomas G. Brophy, who died in 2005 from a 9/11-related illness.

Today, 16 @nypdtransit K9s & their partner cops graduated from training in a ceremony held at the Police Academy. These newly-inducted partners will protect a subway station near you throughout the city. Our K9s’ names come from officers we have lost but we vow to never forget. pic.twitter.com/hX7yBHtywr
