Applications Open For District 28 Community Education Council

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — The Office of the Queens Borough President is now accepting applications for a vacant position on the Community Education Council for District 28, which runs from Forest Hills and Rego Park down to Jamaica.

Community Education Council members keep tabs on the educational needs of the elementary and middle schools in the district they represent, review educational programs, approve zoning lines, submit capital plans and share local concerns with Chancellor Richard A. Carranza and the Panel for Educational Policy.

The District 28 Community Education Council has also hosted meetings on a plan to integrate the district's middle schools, which has sparked heated opposition from some parents. (The planning process was delayed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.)

Community Education Council appointees must be New York City residents and must live, own or operate a business within District 28 to be eligible for the position, which is unpaid.

“The CECs are designed to be a formal voice of community input and insights into shaping the New York City schools system," Acting Queens Borough Borough President Sharon Lee said. "On this critical road of rebuild and recovery for our future, such voices are needed now more than ever.”

Applications are available online at queensbp.org/education and must be emailed to education@queensbp.org by Aug. 7.
