Awkwafina Fan Bill De Blasio Poses For Selfies On Show's NYC Set
The mayor and First Lady Chirlane McCray met the cast and crew of Awkwafina's Forest Hills-inspired TV show.

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS —Bill de Blasio came out as an Awkwafina fan this week, visiting the NYC set of "Nora From Queens" and posing for selfies with the stars.
“She grew up in New York, but she's no grown up — and our city's a better place because of LaGuardia High School's own @awkwafina,” Mayor de Blasio tweeted Thursday evening, alongside photos of him and First Lady Chirlane McCray meeting the cast and crew.
The visit was intended to show the return of filming to the city amid the coronavirus pandemic. "Film & TV production is BACK, and so is New York City!", the mayor tweeted.

The scripted comedy follows Nora Lin — a fictional young rapper-turned-actress who is played- and inspired-by Golden-globe winning actress Awkwafina (née Nora Lum) — as she navigates young adulthood in Queens, alongside her dad (BD Wong), grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) and cousin (Bowen Yang).
She grew up in New York, but she's no grown up — and our city's a better place because of LaGuardia High School's own @awkwafina! What a joy to meet her, the great Lori Tan Chinn and the cast of @NoraFromQueens today. Film & TV production is BACK, and so is New York City! pic.twitter.com/qP8cDW0AIy

Awkwafina is the show’s executive producer, and was born-and-raised in Forest Hills herself.

Many of the show’s scenes have been filmed in Queens, including a scene by the Forest Hills tribute mural to the Ramones on 71st Avenue, but based on the Mayor’s post — where you can see The Hudson Hotel in the background — the crew was filming in Hudson Yards on Thursday.
Since its debut at the beginning of 2020, “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens” received a "Made in NY" award by the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment.
"This Made in NY award means so much to a girl from Queens who grew up seeing very few people who looked like me on screen, much less receiving awards," Awkwafina said in a statement after receiving the award.
The show’s second season is set to debut this summer, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
