Kew Gardens Facing Coronavirus Shutdown As Cases Rise: Mayor

The 11415 and 11367 ZIP codes could close schools and non-essential businesses this week. Another three Queens areas face partial shutdowns.

KEW GARDENS, NY — Non-essential businesses could shut down this week in Kew Gardens as coronavirus cases continue to rise in 19 hotspots across New York City, according to the mayor.

ZIP codes 11415 and 11367 — which include Kew Gardens Hills, Pomonok and Kew Gardens — are among 9 ZIP codes where Mayor Bill de Blasio has proposed a coronavirus lockdown given a coronavirus test positivity rates that have spiked over 3 percent.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave the OK for schools in the ZIP codes to close starting Tuesday.

The second part of the plan — to close non-essential businesses starting Wednesday — is still being reviewed, though de Blasio said he expects the state to approve it.

"...This is to make sure that this virus does not spread more deeply in those communities and threaten lives, and that does not spread to the rest of the city," he said. "So, it's a measure I think we have to take to contain the situation before it gets any worse."

Another 10 ZIP codes with lower infection rates, including several in Queens, face partial shutdowns of "high-risk" activities.

The neighborhoods facing full shutdown, their ZIP codes, positive test rate and number of days above 3 percent positivity are:

  • Midwood — 11230 — 6.98 percent — 14+
  • Bensonhurst/Mapleton — 11204 — 6.47 percent — 14
  • Flatlands/Midwood — 11210 — 5.94 percent — 14+
  • Edgemere/Far Rockaway — 11691 — 5.63 percent — 14+
  • Gerritsen Beach/Homecrest/ Sheepshead Bay — 11229 — 4.36 percent — 11
  • Kew Gardens Hills/Pomonok — 11367 — 3.86 percent — 7
  • Kew Gardens — 11415 — 3.81 percent — 14+
