Red Pipes Free Tour was a Success 6/13!
Neighbors wanting to help Small business on Austin Street met in front of the New Red Pipe Coffee Shop on Sunday, June 13th, 2021 at Noon!
A free tour of Forest Hills, Austin St and the surrounding historical streets was conducted by Dr. Susanna Hof and Ms. Cheryl Cudderback on Sunday, June 13th, 2021 to help our small business neighbors who were harmed financially by the recent Pandemic of 2020/2021. Maps and Tour materials were gathered by customers of the Red Pipe’sCoffee and Vegan restaurant and distributed at no cost to our neighbors. Dr. Hof discussed the History and Architecture of Forest Hills then Ms. Cheryl Cudderback discussed growing up in Forest Hills, Attending P.S. 101 and the Church-in-the Gardens . Cheryl said it
was a joy being a part of this neighborhood especially with all the local movie and TV stars and following the examples of Margaret Slocum Sage and Helen Keller. The local tourists discovered Russell Sage’s widow, Margaret, inherited millions of dollars from Philanthropist “robber baron” Russell Sage and Foundation; and she donated $10 million to Forest Hills (FHGC) to build middle class family homes and she donated the Church Bell and Iron works at the “Little” Church-in-the Gardens. At the end of her life, Margaret Slocum Sage requested one thing from the FHGC and the church minister, “… to hear the beautiful hymns played on the Church Bells she donated since I cannot club the stairs to the Steeple.” Her request was granted!
The two hour tour was concluded by local historian Michael Mulvaney and Mr. Gary Tambrim,a local PUNdit! The tour ended at the murals of Ascan Backus, the farmer for whom Ascan Avenue was named,

Mr Grovsenor Attenbury, landscape architect of Forest Hills Gardens and Central Park in NYC, Mr.Russell Sage and Margaret Slocum Sage! Several tour members visited an Open House in Forest Hills Gardens before ending the tour at “the cottage”formerly the Irish Cottage and 30 neighbors thanked the new owner of the Red Pipe for a great idea by local historians! A good time was had by all during the street fair celebrating our local artists and small business entrepreneurs at the “Festival of Arts” on Austin Street, Forest Hills! Even Candidates for Mayor waved greetings to the customers of the Red Pipe!!
