FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — One of Brooklyn Technical High School's teachers is among the best educators for math and science in the city, according to this year's prestigious Sloan Awards for Excellence.
Lori Bodner, who teaches Algebra II and AP Calculus BC at the high school, was one of seven public school teachers that earned the 11th Annual Sloan Awards for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics in New York City Public High Schools, given out by the Fund of the City of New York this week.
The honor awards each winner $5,000 and $2,500 for their schools.

Bodner was the only Brooklyn teacher to snag the coveted honor. She was joined by six other teachers from Washington Heights, Manhattan, State Island, the Bronx and two from Queens.
“All are brilliant teachers, colleagues, and school leaders who have changed the trajectory of their students’ lives," said Fund President Mary McCormick. "New York is a better place because of their passion for teaching, and the lives of thousands of students and their families have been enriched because of them."

The organization lauded Bodner for creating a classroom culture that is both rigorous and exciting.
“Math is daunting. But Ms. Bodner was just so excited about it when she was teaching it," one of her students said. "She gave me a real love of math and the courage and confidence to pursue it."
The Sloan awards are given to teachers who "achieve superb results in the classroom and inspire young people to pursue careers in science and mathematics."
