Fort Greene Park Makeover: Here Are The 2 Design Choices

The parks department presented to the community these 2 designs for a Fort Greene Park entrance aimed at making the park more welcoming.

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — The parks department has put together two design ideas for a new part of Fort Greene Park, both aimed at making the park more open and welcoming to people. Department officials presented their ideas to the community on Thursday evening. Both concepts put forward a redesign of the corner of Myrtle Ave. and St. Edwards Place, a mostly dark and unpopulated corner of the park, into an expansive stairway entrance with more seating and open pathways, Patch has learned.

The designs are the latest in the Parks Without Borders project that began in November 2015 with a $50 million budget from the mayor. Fort Greene Park was chosen as one of the parks to get a makeover, and the first community input meeting was held in May 2016. The NYC Parks Department then created designs that take into account the comments they received at that meeting, officials said.

The major differences between the two designs are mainly aesthetic: one has more foliage, and the other has more seating. Both are up to code in terms of accessibility, and both open up the street corner, and the entire park, to passers by.
