Nearly 20,000 New York Students Support Investigation of Oil & Gas Industry for Climate Change Based Fraud- NYPIRG Delivers Petition to AG
(Clinton Hill, NY) NYPIRG students at [school name] took a trip to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s NYC office today to drop off hundreds of petition signatures supporting his investigation of ExxonMobil for fraud.
The local drop off was part of a statewide effort which collected nearly 20,000 signatures. The Attorney General is investigating whether the oil industry giant lied to the public and their shareholders about their knowledge of the true impacts of climate change.
“We know that the Attorney’s General office is under a lot of pressure from the oil and gas industry to drop their investigation. But the public is keenly interested in making sure the record is straight about what Exxon knew, and when it knew it. New Yorkers support his investigation moving forward and that’s why we dropped the petitions off today,” said NYPIRG Project Coordinator Camille Goering.

Climate change is the most urgent issue of our time. The last three years have been the hottest in recorded history. Climate change causes extreme weather that brings more intense and frequent heat waves, severe droughts, heavier rainfall, dangerous flooding, and outbreaks of deadly disease.
“Fighting back against the fossil fuel industry’s assault on the planet is one of the main reasons we celebrate Earth Day. So, we thought it would be a good time to shed light on this issue. New York must be a leader on climate action in 2017,” said Tyler Williams, a Pratt student.
