Glen Cove High School Performing 'Sweeney Todd'

Masquers Society spring production plays two nights.

The Glen Cove High School Masquers Society presents its production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical "Sweeney Todd" Friday and Saturday.

The show plays at 8 p.m. both days. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for students and $6 for senior citizens.

The play tells the story of Benjamin Barker, known as Sweeney Todd, the "infamous Demon Barber of Fleet Street" who returns to 19th-century London after spending 15 years in a penal colony on trumped up charges.

He learns his wife poisoned herself after she was raped by the judge who sent him away. He vows revenge on the man and ultimately the rest of the world, transforming into a serial killer who murders his barbershop customers and has them baked into pies by an accomplice, the pie maker Mrs. Lovett.

The show's musical director is Edward Norris, and Tom Wallace runs stage direction.

"We picked this one based on the talent we have this year," said Norris, who described the cast as a standout group. "It's been a challenge, but it's really going to be something."
