Glen Cove To Host Daily News Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament

The event is the oldest and largest amateur boxing tournament in the country.

The Howard Davis Jr. Glen Cove Boxing Club and Glen Cove Parks & Recreation Department will host a special Daily News Golden Gloves event, the oldest and largest amateur boxing tournament in the country, at the Glen Cove High School on Thursday.

This year marks the 90th Anniversary of the renowned amateur boxing tournament. Residents will get to see some of Glen Cove’s most talented amateur boxers duke it out in the ring.

“It is an honor to bring a Daily News Golden Gloves event back to Glen Cove” Darcy Belyea, Director of Glen Cove Parks & Recreation and the Club’s Treasurer, said in a press release. “Our volunteer coaches and staff have worked hard to create an outstanding recreational outlet for our city’s young boxers and to have the chance to see top notch boxing matches and exhibitions right in our own backyard is an incredible opportunity.”

The event will feature at least eight semi-final bouts in the Open and Novice divisions of the tournament. A special 185 lb. Masters exhibition match will also feature Howard Davis Jr. Glen Cove Boxing Club coach and local businessman Mike “Machine Gun” Graziose.

Tickets will be available at the door at a cost of $20 for adults and $10 for students with a valid school ID. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the first exhibition match starts at 7:15 p.m.

This tournament has helped launch the careers of more than 30 world and Olympic boxing champions – including the Glen Cove Boxing Club’s namesake, Howard Davis Jr. Proceeds from the event will help operate the club.

The Glen Cove Boxing Club was established in May 2005 under the direction of the Glen Cove Parks & Recreation department and is dedicated to serving the youth of the Glen Cove community at no charge. The club is located at Carney Street Extension adjacent to the Glen Cove Child Day Care center, on a property provided by the City of Glen Cove. The facility is staffed by an experienced and dedicated group of volunteer coaches who are all registered and certified with USA Boxing.
