Glen Cove Names 2017 Veterans Day Honoree

Come pay your respects to our nation's veterans on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Doughboy Memorial.

The City of Glen Cove will recognize Navy veteran and retired Glen Cove Police Officer Roger Weldon as the City's 2017 Veterans Day guest of honor.

The City and its veteran community will come together Saturday, Nov. 11 to remember those who have served our country in times of war. Come pay your respects to our nation's veterans at 11 a.m. at the Doughboy Memorial, which is located on the corner of the Glen Cove Library at 4 Glen Cove Ave.

“I am pleased to announce that Roger Weldon will be our city’s 2017 honoree at the city’s annual Veterans Day ceremony and service,” Mayor Reggie Spinello said in a press release.

Weldon says he is proud to have served the United States of America as well as his Glen Cove community and is humbled by the honor bestowed upon him by his fellow veterans. The lifelong Glen Cove resident joined the United States Navy in 1950 and completed his service in 1954 as a 2nd Class Petty Officer Engineman. He also served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve from 1972 through 1992.

Weldon was a Glen Cove Police officer for 20 years, from 1957 to 1977, and has been an active member of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department since 1957. He worked for LILCO and for Buckner Brothers, and is a member of the Howard A. Van Wagner Post 962 American Legion

“Roger is a life-long Glen Cove resident who proudly served our nation in the United States Navy and continues to serve our community through his volunteerism with the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department,” said Ben Farnan, of the VFW James Donohue Post 347 and former Glen Cove Public Safety Commissioner.
