This is an exciting time for the Gold Coast Public Library and its patrons. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, in December 2020 community residents resoundingly approved a bond to fund the purchase of 2.5 acres of land within the community for the purpose of constructing a new Gold Coast Public Library.

On Feb. 27 and again on March 2, the library hosted two virtual community forums to share with the community the next phase of design for the new library, hear their feedback and answer questions. These meetings focused on several design changes to the proposed library in response to community input received during previous meetings. “We thank the community for their continued support and for participating in these discussions surrounding the design of our new library,” said library Board of Trustees President Nancy Benchimol.
Architect Pansy Cheng from the library’s architectural firm H2M presented both the revised exterior site plans and the interior design of the new library citing the major change was flipping the design to be a mirror image of the original design. By doing this, the reading garden will be in the front of the library and a vehicle turnaround has been added to improve the parking lot.

Those residents participating in the virtual meetings expressed their opinions on the new design. “We appreciate our patrons taking the time to learn about the new library design and to share their thoughts with us,” Library Director Mike Morea said. He also explained how the library is working with Nassau County and the Town of Oyster Bay to obtain the necessary approvals and permits before construction can begin. “When the new library is completed, it will be a valuable resource to everyone in our community and a source of pride,” Morea said.
As the library moves forward with its plans, future virtual community meetings will be scheduled to keep the community informed.
