Harbor Child Care - April is the Month of the Young Child

Harbor Child Care looks forward to its special celebrations with teachers, families, and communities.

(Harbor Child Care)

In mid-March of 2020, Harbor Child Care closed for what was supposed to be a two-week period to "flatten the curve" regarding a virus no one had ever heard of. Those two weeks turned into two and a half months. We reopened Harbor Child Care centers in June. During that time, and subsequently, Harbor Child Care has had to pivot on a dime regarding a myriad of issues. We endured and still endure the often-changing regulations from healthcare organizations and licensing agencies. With all those changes we have remained committed to our mission- serving our families and their children.

Resilience was evident in our teachers. We thank our teachers and staff for their continued support. Families trusted us for care in a child care setting when we knew so little about the COVID-19 virus. Harbor was especially encouraged by the children who navigated this "new normal" without any issues or concerns. "The lesson here is we can all rise up against any adversity. It warmed my heart to hear the children's voices once again. I felt "normal" for the first time in a long time." - Florence Barbour, Acting Executive Director.

It has been a long journey since June but we are thriving! April is the Month of the Young Child, and each year Harbor Child Care looks forward to its special celebrations with teachers, families, and communities. The pandemic has limited our ability for in-person events, but we will share festivities remotely and on social media. Planned activities include egg hunts, pajama days, dance parties, art projects, baking, spring concerts, team-building, sports day, color day, just to name a few.

Harbor Child Care offers an educational environment for infants, toddlers, pre-K, and school-age children in the communities of Glen Cove, Manhasset, Mineola, New Hyde Park, and Uniondale. Since our inception in 1973 as a not-for-profit child care organization, we believe over 20,000 children have experienced warm, kind, and intelligent care and education in our early childhood, school-age, and summer programs.

Harbor Child Care continues to follow social distancing guidelines from the CDC, the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH), and the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS). Our staff wears protective facial coverings throughout the day. Cleaning and disinfecting occur before the children arrive in the morning and after they leave in the afternoon and additional cleaning service is done in the evening.
