How Glen Cove Residents Can Prepare for Hurricane Hermine

The City of Glen Cove want residents to be prepared for an emergency in case Hurricane Hermine’s path does cross with ours.

Officials say they are closely monitoring the storm.

Glen Cove’s Office of Emergency Management will be monitoring the storm throughout Labor Day weekend and will provide updated information as it becomes available.

The City’s Emergency Task Force will be prepared for power outages, downed trees and electrical wires, coastal and street flooding, transportation issues, emergency medical care and overall public safety.

County Executive Ed Mangano has issued a Storm Surge Warning for residents living in flood prone areas and a Tropical Storm Warning for all Nassau County residents.

The National Weather Service predicts flooding will likely occur on Sunday and Monday at high tide, resulting in 2 to 4 feet of flood waters.

Residents living near the shore may be asked to leave their homes as the storm’s track becomes more clear. To learn high tide times for your area, go here.

The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management has outlined evacuations routes from Coastal Evacuation Areas that can be found here. Residents can use these evacuation routes to property secure their homes.

The City will be providing residents with storm updates based on the severity of the weather conditions via telephone and the City’s web site, www.glencove-li.us. As part of a resident’s readiness plan, here are a series of suggestions for storm preparedness.

Storm Preparedness Checklist:

• Register your home and cell phone numbers for emergency notifications from Mayor Spinello and the City of Glen Cove. During periods of mass outages and storms, the system is activated to provide the public with important information. Forms are available online at www.glencove-li.us.
• Those who have life sustaining medical equipment are urged to email Glen Cove EMS at joaquinpreparedness@gmail.com or call (516) 676-0366 to be put on a check list.
• Make sure your cell phones, tablets and laptops are charged; have a back-up cell phone charger.
• Check your supply of batteries, flashlights, bottled water, ready-to-eat foods, wood for the fireplace, propane for barbeque grills and emergency medical supplies.
• Secure your outdoor patio furniture and potted plants.
• Boaters ensure your boats are tied up and chained or take your vessel out of the water.
• Place home fire extinguishers in a convenient location.
• Drive with caution during heavy storm activities as there may be flooding, falling branches and trees and hazardous road conditions.
