LONG ISLAND, NY — The remnants of Hurricane Zeta will bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Long Island Thursday, the National Weather Service says.

The remnants of Zeta, which made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane in Louisiana Wednesday afternoon, will interact with a stationary front to the south of the island.

The heaviest rain will fall Thursday afternoon and the early evening, the weather service says.

Long Island could see up to 2 inches of rain through Friday morning and wind gusts close to 40 mph. The strongest winds are likely late Thursday night and Friday morning.

The storm is expected to bring the first measurable snowfall of the season to parts of the Northeast. On the island, it will be cold, with lows in the low 40s overnight Thursday into early Friday, but not cold enough for any of the white stuff.

"New Yorkers are well accustomed to intense October storms and this one has the potential to deliver a mixed medley of cold rain, wind and snow across much of the state," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "Our state emergency response assets are prepared to assist our local partners if needed. I am asking all travelers to review seasonal safety tips and slow down on our roadways during this storm."

The storm system will pull away Friday afternoon and evening, with clearing developing from west to east as high pressure build from the west. This will lead to dry and chilly weather to begin the weekend. Temperatures may drop below the freezing mark on Long Island Saturday morning.
