GLEN COVE, NY — A COVID-19 vaccination distribution pop-up event is planned for St. Hyacinth R.C. Church in Glen Head on Thursday, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran’s office said.

The county is partnering up with Northwell Health with aims to vaccinate 500 members of the Glen Cove community in the ongoing effort to ensure equitable distribution and the vaccinations will be targeted to “vulnerable and hard to reach” communities, including seniors, Curran’s office stated in a news release.

Long Island Cares will also be on hand during the event to provide 300 boxes of food in its own efforts to combat food insecurity in the community.

The people scheduled for vaccination had previously booked appointments and there will not be any walk-up appointments, Curran’s office said.

Curran called equitable vaccine access her priority and said that the pop-up is another way county officials are “making sure every resident has their shot at getting the shot.” She lauded Northwell for joining in the event and said that officials will continue to work together to bring the vaccine to the county’s communities.

So, far the county has vaccinated over 19% of Nassau’s residents, Curran said, adding that she is committed to expanding access to the vaccine so that more people can be vaccinated which will aid in beating the pandemic.

“We can do it, Nassau,” she said.

City of Glen Cove Mayor Tim Tenke said officials are extremely grateful to Curran for her leadership, as well as Father Daniel Nash of St. Hyacinth’s, the Diocese of Rockville Centre, and Northwell for partnering up with the county to make vaccination site a reality for the city.

“It's crucial for us to look out for our most vulnerable residents, and this is an important step in combatting what has been an inescapable virus,” he said.

The pop-up is the second site the county partnered with Northwell on. The first event was held in Elmont where over 1,000 people were vaccinated.

State Assemb. Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) said he is confident that the pop-up vaccination program will continue as soon as New York receives additional dosages.

“The people of the north shore communities have continually requested a vaccination location close to home. I want to thank Nassau County Executive Laura Curran for listening, and I want to thank Northwell for partnering to provide this sorely needed vaccination center,” he said.
