Prepare for the Winter Storm in Glen Cove

Get your shovels ready.

With possible blizzard hitting Long Island this weekend, Glen Cove’s Emergency Task Force to be at the ready to combat the winter challenges.

The Emergency Task Force is ready for basically anything: heavy snow, ice, power outages, downed trees and electrical wires, coastal and street flooding, transportation issues, emergency medical care and overall public safety.

The Task Force is made up of Glen Cove Fire Department, Police Department, EMS, Auxiliary Police, Harbor Patrol, Department of Public Works, Water Department and Public Relations teams.

Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello will be providing residents with storm updates through telephone alerts and on the City’s website.

“With heavy snow, blizzard and white-out conditions expected as early as Saturday morning into Sunday along with Saturday’s full moon, I believe it is always prudent to air on the side of caution when planning for a storm of any magnitude,” Spinello said in a press release. “Glen Cove residents can begin to get prepared so there is easy access to supplies for your family and a comfort level that your home has been secured to effectively weather any storm to the best of one’s abilities.”

“If possible, stay off the roads Saturday afternoon into Sunday, get your snow shovels ready, shop for the essentials, stock the fireplace with wood and flashlights with batteries, charge your phone batteries and fill your gas tanks,” Spinello said.

Below, the City has offered a list of must-know phone numbers and a storm preparedness checklist.

Snow Storm Preparedness Checklist:

• Park cars and trucks in your driveway, front lawn, home garage or in the City’s municipal garages on Friday night as the more cars that are off the streets of the Glen Cove, the more effective the Department of Public Works plowing efforts can be to meet the mobility needs of residents.
• Register your home and cell phone numbers for emergency notifications from Mayor Spinello and the City of Glen Cove. During periods of mass outages and storms, the system is activated to provide the public with important information. Forms are available online at www.glencove-li.us.
• Individuals who have life sustaining medical equipment are urged to email Glen Cove EMS at joaquinpreparedness@gmail.com or call (516) 676-0366 to be put on a check list.
• Make sure your cell phones, tablets and laptops are charged; have a back-up cell phone charger.
• Check your supply of batteries, flash lights, bottled water, ready-to-eat foods, wood for the fireplace, propane for barbeque grills and emergency medical supplies.
• Place home fire extinguishers in a convenient location.
• Drive with caution during heavy storm activities as there may be snow drifts, black ice, flooding, falling branches and trees and hazardous road conditions.
