R.M. Finley Student Wins First Ever Regional GeoBee

Glen Cove, N.Y. — Last week, R.M. Finley Middle School in the Glen Cove City School District, along with middle schools in the Locust Valley and Oyster Bay school districts, hosted a “Regional Geo Bee” for middle school students.

Due to the pandemic, the annual National Geo Bee, an annual geography contest sponsored by the National Geographic Society, was cancelled this year. However, Glen Cove educators wanted their students to have a virtual competition which led to the creation of a friendly competition with other north shore schools.

The three schools completed their first round and the top 3 students from each middle school participated in the Regional Geo Bee. Sarai Fernandez, grade 6; Ryan Mitchell, grade 6; and Michael Renga, grade 7; represented Finley at the competition. Michael Renga put Glen Cove on top as he was crowned the winner of the first North Shore Regional Geo Bee.

All participating students received a goody bag and certificate that was sponsored by National Geographic and Dr. Sheena Jacob, K-12 Social Studies Coordinator at Glen Cove City School District; Dr. Joseph Pesquiera, Supervisor of Social Studies, Career Technology and Service Learning at Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District; and Mr. Bryan Sarandrea, Coordinator of Social Studies and Business at Locust Valley School District.
