Glen Cove police say 5-year-old Gracie was found crying in pain outside a home on Taft Place and taken to a veterinarian for medical attention. The vet — a neighbor of the woman who found Gracie — determined that the cat had been shot twice and was paralyzed.

The cat had a microchip and the vet notified the owners, DJ and Christina Hunnicutt, of Sherwood Road. They told police that Gracie is very friendly to everyone in the neighborhood, and would follow them whenever they took their dog out for a walk.

Gracie's family set up a GoFundMe page to pay for medical expenses. The campaign's organizer disabled new donations for the fundraiser after collecting $18,035. The goal was to raise $8,980.

Patch has reached out to the GoFundMe organizer but has not received a comment as of Tuesday afternoon.

On the fundraiser's page, however, the organizer said the donations paid for Gracie's spine surgery and covered a few weeks of her physical therapy.

"We know Gracie will never be the same cat but we hope we can still give her a full life, filled with strolls around the neighborhood and lots of love," the update read. "With any money left over, we would like to donate it to a local animal/cat rescue. It is truly amazing to see how everyone came together for our little Gracie. We want to thank everyone who donated or sent positive vibes. You may never know how grateful we are."
