SAFE and TAC Applaud Glen Cove Public Library

The Glen Cove Public Library continues to set the bar higher to protect staff, visitors and patrons from exposure to second hand smoke.

The City of Glen Cove Public Library, a long time Tobacco Control Champion, continues to set the bar higher in their efforts to protect patrons, staff and visitors from exposure to second hand smoke. Many years ago they proved themselves to be early adopters in creating the first partnership in the City with the State’s Tobacco Free Outdoor Initiative by adopting an Entryway Ban. According to Tobacco Action Coalition of LI (TAC) Manager- Ms. Meschkow, the Library’s leadership was the impetus needed to motivate numerous other entities including the City to adopt new protective practices for their Outdoor areas. In addition, several Property Managers stepped up to protect their residents living in Multi-family Complexes with policies for both on the Grounds and in the Units.

SAFE-Executive Director Dr. Harris and Ms. Meschkow of TAC have been working in tandem to advance a climate receptive to working towards a Tobacco Free Community. Most recently after the State of New York required all Public Libraries to establish 100 feet Entryway Bans, once again Library Director Kathie Flynn and the Board of Trustees went above and beyond by voluntarily including vaping in their policy. The Surgeon General declared vaping a youth epidemic; As Centers of Life-Long Learning and the HUB of the Community the Library is playing an important role in helping to prevent the next generation of smokers by changing the social norms associated with the acceptability of smoking.
