Tobay Beach Dune Event Postponed Indefinitely

Tobay Beach was so badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy that the Town of Oyster Bay is cancelling the annual event that brings volunteers there to strengthen dunes with new plantings.

That doesn't mean it won't happen this year, according to Supervisor John Venditto. He said the program will be brought back as soon as contractors are finished rebuilding the dunes that had faced the ocean.

The program had been scheduled for Saturday, March 16. It has drawn thousands of volunteers of all ages since it was conceived.

"The cancellation of the Dune Stabilization project represents an unfortunate ramification of this unprecedented storm, because this event provides an excellent opportunity for community groups and volunteers to lend a hand in an important preservation effort,” Venditto said in a statement. “Although the effects of Hurricane Sandy have been felt far and wide throughout the Town of Oyster Bay, this is
something that we will come back from, and the Town will continue to be intricately involved in cleanup, restoration, and outreach efforts."

Contractors are also rebuilding the beach's pavilion and decking, which had been heavily damaged, the Town said. The work is expected to be completed by summer.
