Vote Planned On Bigger, Better Gold Coast Public Library

If passed, the $10.8-million bond would authorize the purchase of 2.5 acres of land in Glen Head to build a bigger, better library.

GLEN HEAD, NY — A vote is planned in less than two weeks on whether to buy 2.5 acres of land to build a bigger, better version of the Gold Coast Public Library in Glen Head.

Residents will vote Tuesday, Dec. 8, on the bond. If passed, a larger, modernized library would be built on Glen Head Road. Officials hope it will give residents a cost-efficient, fully-functioning, multi-purpose library that will be an asset to the community and source of pride. Voting will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Library Annex.

The library's board of trustees has searched for a new home for years. Officials said the new building would be 30 percent larger, increasing to about 11,000 square feet. All services would be offered at a single location, with a one-floor, open design built to accommodate more programming and events, small study rooms, a teen seating and study area, an outdoor reading garden, more parking spaces, flexible shelf space for larger collections and expanded community rooms that are accessible from the outside to accommodate larger events. The new library would be serviced using the current library staff, officials said.

The project is expected to cost just over $11.3 million, of which $539,500 would be funded using library money. The total bond would be for $10.8 million. For every $500,000 of assessed fair market value, a household would pay an additional cost of about $5 a month, or $60 per year, beginning in 2022. The library tax would still remain among the lowest in Nassau County.
