Homeless Girl Scout Troop Sells 32,000 Boxes Of Cookies
The city's first troop for homeless girls spent a week selling cookies in Union Square.

UNION SQUARE, NY — New York City's Girl Scout troop for homeless girls sold more than 32,000 boxes of cookies in their first cookie sale this month in Union Square.
Troop 6000, which serves girls living in the city's shelter system, spent a week in April at the Kellogg's NYC cafe in Union Square selling cookies. Their goal was to try and sell 6,000 boxes between April 9 and April 13, which they exceeded several times over. The Girl Scouts of Greater New York confirmed that Troop 6000 sold at least 32,000 boxes of cookies in their first-ever cookie sale. NBC New York first reported on the troop's successful cookie sales.
Troop 6000 formed in February 2017 to provide homeless girls in the city's shelter system with the organization's community and programming opportunities. The Girl Scouts of Greater New York is funding Troop 6000, according to a New York Times profile, covering the scouts' membership fees, starter kits with patches, pins, workbooks and vests, and their monthly dues.

The troop launched in a Queens motel that is being used by the city to house homeless families, but the Girl Scouts say their plan is to expand the program throughout the city so the troop can meet in shelters in other boroughs. Troop 6000 is led by women who are also living in the city's shelter system, according to the Girl Scouts.
