Kips Bay Target Gets Opening Date, Hiring New Staff

The pared-down version of the department store will open on Second Avenue in April.

KIPS BAY, NY — Retail giant Target will continue its New York City expansion in 2019, and has targeted April for its opening in Kips Bay, the company announced this week.

Target's small-format Kips Bay store will hold a grand opening ceremony on April 7 and is currently hiring a staff of 80 employees. The company will hold two hiring fairs on Feb. 8 and 13 at an event space located at 511 W. 25th St., and is also taking applications online.

"We are building a talented team of 80 new team members who will help us serve Kips Bay residents and Midtown shoppers to meet their on-the-go needs. At Target, we value our people who help us serve the local community and look forward to growing our team while providing them meaningful opportunities to build and develop valuable career skills," store team leader Daniel Kraus said in a statement.

Target signed a lease in 2018 with the investment firm Blackstone for a 21,000-square-foot space on the corner of 29th Street and Second Avenue, the company said. The terms of the lease were not made public.

The Kips Bay location will offer many of a traditional Target's staples, including beauty products, clothes and accessories and home decor. The store will also have a food and beverage offering, including fresh produce, plus smaller technology products and accessories.

Target's Kips Bay store will be its fifth small-format location to open in Manhattan. The retail company irked its new neighbors in the East Village when it opened its neighborhood store in July when an attempt to pay homage to the area's past backfired. The recreated, Target-themed awning of shuttered village institution CBGB was seen as particularly egregious by longtime neighborhood residents.
