Man Fatally Hit By Truck Near His Home In Union Square: NYPD

A Freightliner truck driver fatally struck a 76-year-old man crossing the street, police said.

UNION SQUARE, NY — A truck driver fatally struck a 76-year-old man near his apartment in Union Square Tuesday morning, according to the NYPD.

James Buzzell, 76, was fatally hit by a truck driver near East 16th Street and Fifth Avenue Tuesday about 9:15 a.m., police said.

When cops responded, they found Buzzell lying unconscious and unresponsive in the roadway with injuries to his chest, police said. Emergency medical personnel took him to Bellevue Hospital, where he died, according to police.

Police later found that the driver, 39, was trying to park a 2019 Freightliner on the street's parking lane in the block west of Union Square when he struck Buzzell, who was crossing the street near his East 16th Street home, according to the NYPD.

No arrests have been made, and the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident, police said.

Over the weekend, a woman, 80, walking in Nolita was killed by a cabbie while crossing Broome Street. In February, a truck driver hit and killed a 27-year-old teacher from upstate New York. A 90-year-old woman died after a driver hit her while she was walking at Bayard Street and Bowery in November.

There have been five fatal pedestrian incidents in the Union Square area since 2009, according to Vision Zero data through April 30, 2019.
