“New York City and the village of Harlem lost a community pillar this past week with the passing of real estate pioneer Eugene Webb. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Webb during my first campaign for Manhattan District Attorney more than 10 years ago. He struck me as the embodiment of Harlem in so many ways — community-centered, strong, generous and a proud keeper of its history and all of its richness. Like all great custodians of history, his life’s journey cast a wide and wonderful net.

When we first met, Mr. Webb shared photos with me of my mom taking a handful of children from Harlem to the White House through an initiative sponsored by the New York Urban League. In the tradition of a wise community elder, he also made sure to remind me of the responsibility I would take should I win my race, and to be thankful and grateful for those who came before me. He will be missed by many, like me, whose lives he touched even briefly.”
