Target To Open In Kips Bay

A smaller version of the superstore is coming to the neighborhood in 2019.

KIPS BAY, NY — A new Target will open in Kips Bay next year, the company announced on Wednesday.

The superstore is adding its eighth Manhattan location in Kips Bay, at the corner of 29th Street and Second Avenue. This location will be another "small-format" Target, a smaller version of the traditionally-sized Target for urban areas. It will be 21,000 square feet in total, the company said.

Target signed a lease with the investment firm Blackstone, the company said. The terms of the lease were not made public.

The Kips Bay location will offer many of a traditional Target's staples, including beauty products, clothes and accessories and home decor. The store will also have a food and beverage offering, including fresh produce, plus smaller technology products and accessories.

Target said the store would likely employ 75 people.

Two new Targets are expected to open in Manhattan this year, before the Kips Bay location is ready in 2019. Outposts in the East Village and the Lower East Side will open this summer, according to the company. The East Village Target, located at 500 E. 14th St., is getting ready for a July opening, and preparing to hire 110 employees, the company said.

In addition to the Kips Bay location, Target plans to open stores in Hell's Kitchen and the Upper East Side next year.
